Virtual Worlds Rights Definition and Defense

We need to better define what are the rights of virtual users, the cases where they apply, and how we should defend them.

Documents and charters

Potential projects

  • Open an abuse report database, to let players/users report right issues
  • Having discussions with virtual worlds owners about reported abuses and/or consider legal actions
  • Run subscription and sponsorship programs (MMORPG buyout, buildaworld.net bounties, lawyers)

Gameforge partnership

Work on Ryzom and discuss with Gameforge

  • Discussion on the forum
  • What to propose?:
    • Opening of part of the code without touching its heart and without asking to create private servers.
    • Opening of part of the lore, maybe the complete lore, especially this metaplot which is its guiding line and the heart of the game's theme.
    • Put forward a mean to collaborate on the animation of the game itself, while updating the storyline and the metaplot of Ryzom.
    • Opensourcing the client (a Mac/Linux client)
    • Completely open source the software
    • Opensource the "MMORPG Skeleton + Tools" package
    • Creative commons for lore and artwork
    • Collaboration on server infrastructure
    • ...

Technical informations

  • NeL3D Documentation
  • Solipsis: Solipsis is a pure peer-to-peer system for a massively shared virtual world. There are no central servers at all: it only relies on end-users' machines.

The following information is adapted from the post by Cayle on the forum:

  • Possible existing platforms:
    • CrystalSpace/Planeshift - Planeshift is built on CrystalSpace. CrystalSpace has some really nice editing features. Its world is in an xml file and can be edited that way. It supports imports from most 3D tools and can support level imports from Valve's level editor. It is unknown if it works with other BSP editors, such as the open source Quake Army Knife.
    • Delta 3D - It is a game engine developed by the US Navy and includes practically a who's who of open source physics, audio and rendering components: OpenSceneGraph, Open Dynamics Engine, Cal3D, and OpenAL. It is unknown how OpenSceneGraph compares to OGRE in rendering speed, but if you look at its screenshots page, is is simply amazing in quality. The dtAudio component of Delta 3D even supports the doppler effect!
  • Possible components:
    • Ogre - Is the gold standard open source 3D rendering engine. It is not a game engine per se, but only a 3D engine.
    • Blender - It has a game engine. It uses OGRE for rendering.

The following information is adapted from the post by sfb on the forum:

  • Details on the MMORPG Skeleton, NeL and OGRE:
    • MMORPG Skeleton+Tools (closed-source) provides the tools and a number of implementations related to modules in NeL (open-source) that we (the community) do not know how to use. Additionally it does a lot of the leg work for things such as keeping all of the services involved in your server synchronized. This would be a huge win, since these are the issues that Free Software games struggle with or (as is more often the case) simply do not implement to their detriment.
sfb's comments on the Skeleton package:
—The MMORPG Skeleton package is highly non-trivial code. It is the kind of code that my group has struggled with "perfecting" for years and I'd consider us a pretty typical open-source project. Seeing how the pros do it would help generate a lot of independent knowledge and thought. Additionally it'd serve for a launch pad for many MMORPGs to come.
    • NeL is not tied to DirectX... directly. NeL was developed using OpenGL and DirectX support was added after the first public beta when massive problems with ATI video card performance was uncovered. NeL completely abstracts the "video" API - it even does it well enough that you could use OGRE with NeL. It is true, however, that the DirectX driver is a much more modern implementation, as they implemented lessons learned during the creation of the OpenGL driver.
    • OGRE first and foremost is not a game engine and NeL is not just a 3D engine. Whenever you compare OGRE to NeL you're comparing apples to oranges. OGRE is a phenomenal graphics engine but that is all. CrystalSpace has a long long way to go. They've finally seen the light and redesigned their 3D engine but it's still a little clunky and slow.

Priorities and repartition of those priorities

We have lots of parameters to define a priority:

Reflexions to improve the game

You probably want to use the word "Reflections"

The document is an advanced draft of ways to improve the game:

Proposals for the game

Ergonomics of the play

  • Creation of private channel;
  • Creation of personal emotes;
  • Sleeping position;
  • Jumping, diving
  • Animated emotes;
  • Modification of the way the communication channel window is opening ( explanation);
  • Destruction of object in the end of the list, or separated near the list;
  • Increase the continent to continent travel difficulty (not any patrol but...);
  • Inter-continental ticket really expensive, function of fame or anything else;
  • Creation of transports to ship raw materials between continents;
  • Definitive implementation and balance of all weapons;
  • Finish the encyclopedia and rites;
  • More pronounced differences between races:
    • Plans to create weapons specific to certain races or factions;
    • Plans to create armors specific to certain races or factions;
      • All this thanks to rites and fame/reputation.
  • Discount according to faction points;
  • Possibility to publish newspapers on Atys world. They could be sent by mail or displayed on a blackboard available in big cities. Reporters are a key to role playing. Newspapers are written by users of course.

The Game Masters

  • Rethink the entity creation/controlling in the game for the Game Masters. (I don't understand. To be discussed on the forum.)

The raw materials

  • The raw materials should be damaged during teleportation;
  • Creation of raw materials that can't be teleported;
  • Creation of a caravan that transports the raw materials from one point to another:
    • Cost depending on the place, the fame, the distance, why not with or without loss of characteristics.

The animals

  • use of the Mektoubs:
    • lifespan;
    • food price;
    • transport capacity;
    • fighting on Mektoub;
    • free command with confirmation;
  • Animal training --> Creation of an animal trainer class?
  • Bring back in/Re-enable the kitin patrols (see discussion here (post));

Guilds

  • Statistics;
  • Statistics exportation in an easy way (opendocument for example)
    • Chest state, guild members, levels,...
