The Free Ryzom Campaign and the Virtual Citizenship Association
I will be presenting our story so far at the linux.conf.au conference in Sydney tomorrow.
Slides are still being worked on (plenty of english mistakes I am sure) but feel free to comment and or modify them.
I should have the time to download any addition anybody made here before going to the conference tomorrow 7am in Australia (17h monday in France, 18h GMT). I may be able to get some stuff even later if I can find an internet access at the conference.
Please post comment in the discussion thread on the forum.

%\item Nevrax went into bankruptcy
Xavier Antoviaque created ryzom.org with the support of :
\begin{itemize}
\item former Nevrax employees
\item members of the NeL community
\item some ryzom players
\item other supporter of open source software
\end{itemize}
Aim: buying ryzom and making the first full-featured open source MMORPG

%\item Nevrax went into bankruptcy
\begin{itemize}
\item In 2002, the Blender community raised more than 100 000 Euros to save the 3D engine.
\item ryzom.org hoped to achieve the same thing with Ryzom:
\begin{itemize}
\item it codified its commitments into a \emph{social contract}
\item and started to collect donation pledges
\end{itemize}
\item The operation attracted wide media coverage including BBC, lemonde.fr , digg and slashdot
\item Donation pledges reached 170 000 Euros in 25 days, including US\$60 000 from the Free Software Foundation.
\end{itemize}

\begin{slide}{Social contract}
\rput[lb](-5cm,-7cm){\includegraphics[width=6cm]{concept_art/matis/matis_18.ps}}
ryzom.org social contract is largely based on the Debian social contract
\begin{enumerate}
\item We will defend the rights of virtual citizens.
\item We will promote the use of Free Software in online universes.
\item We consider the avatars should be the property of their respective online players and virtual citizens.
%\item Our priorities are virtual citizens, online players and free software.
\item We will not hide problems. \item Our decision process will be based on participative democracy.
\end{enumerate}

\begin{slide}{GPLing a MMORPG ... not so simple!}
\rput[lb](-5cm,-7cm){\includegraphics[width=6cm]{concept_art/matis/matis_18.ps}}
Unlike most open source project an MMORPG is more than a complex software:
%\item Nevrax went into bankruptcy
\begin{itemize}
\item Client and server code with its documentation
\item Heavy (and expensive) network infrastructure
\item Paying customer base and social community
\item Collection of graphic and digital art designs
\end{itemize}
\end{slide}

%---------------------------------------------------------------------- SLIDE -
\begin{slide}{Organisation of the offer}
\rput[lb](-5cm,-7cm){\includegraphics[width=6cm]{concept_art/matis/matis_18.ps}}
%The main issue: credibility.
%The offer ryzom.org made to the tribunal was organised as follows:
%\item Nevrax went into bankruptcy
\begin{itemize}
\item A corporate company ``ryzonel which was to be own by:
\begin{itemize}
\item The not for profit ``virtual citizenship association %which collected the pledges
\item ``Mekensleep a company whose CEO is Olivier Lejade
\item Valentin Lacambre%, a well known name in the French open source community
\end{itemize}
\item Ryzonel would have maintained the ryzom servers and open the source of the whole game as promised in the social contract of ryzom.org.
\item Unfortunately, Ryzom was sold to Gameforge %which offered more cash and reemploy more Nevrax employees
\end{itemize}
\end{slide}
%------------------------------------------------------------------------------
%---------------------------------------------------------------------- SLIDE -
\begin{slide}{The Nevrax Library (NeL)}
\rput[lb](-5cm,-7cm){\includegraphics[width=6cm]{concept_art/matis/matis_18.ps}}
%Ryzom is out of reach, but there is still hope:
\begin{itemize}
\item Nevrax left behind the Nevrax Library (NeL), a GPL toolkit for the development of massively online universes.
\begin{itemize}
\item NeL3D: 3D audio and video rendering modules
\item NeLNet: network library
\item NeLPacs: world surface representations for movement and collision management for both server and client
\item MelMisc: core types, functionality and utilities necessary to use the Net, 3D or PACS libraries
\end{itemize}
\item The NeL is available at www.nevrax.org
%\item It is not know if Gameforge will keep updating and developing these tools
\end{itemize}
\end{slide}
%------------------------------------------------------------------------------
%---------------------------------------------------------------------- SLIDE -
\begin{slide}{What now?}
\rput[lb](-5cm,-7cm){\includegraphics[width=6cm]{concept_art/matis/matis_18.ps}}
\begin{itemize}
\item The amount of interest in ryzom.org shows how many people are interested in an open source MMORPG
\item \emph{\textbf{www.virtualcitizenship.org}} now succeeds to ryzom.org
\item We are currently discussing actions in 3 directions:
\begin{itemize}
\item a new campaign for acquiring another game.
\item the development of a new MMORPG or joining forces with existing open source project (Planeshift, Project Angela and/or Peragro Tempus)
%\begin{itemize}
%\item Planeshift, Project Angela and/or Peragro Tempus
%\end{itemize}
\item Working on the newly opensourced \emph{Second Life}
\end{itemize}
