Hi all,
Tuesday 16/01 I will present the ryzom.org / vitual citizen association at the open source gaming miniconf during linux.conf.au in Sydney.
http://lca2007.linux.org.au/Miniconfs/Gaming/ProgramNew#talk8
It is a good opportunity to advertise our community a little bit and maybe motivate some people to join us. Of course everything would have been better if we could have aquired ryzom. But ryzom itself was not the aim of the project as much as a mean to provide the open source community with a fully featured MMORPG and making it evolve ourselve (or at least this is my way of seeing it). So ryzom.org IS NOT over!
The presentation is not finalised yet but it should feature:
 a summary of our story so far
 comparison/discussion of relevant projects (Blender, NeL ...)
 our future possible directions:
- development of a game from scratch
- acquiring another MMORPG
- other possibilities?
I'd like to present the spirit of our community and I invite you all to give suggestions as of what I should put emphasis on.
I take this opportunity to give my 2cents words on the situation: i love the idea of creating a game from scratch, but I have to admit that a first evaluation gives limited chances of success because of the enormity of the task, the necessary ressources (human and material) and the lack of rapid real results (a half finished MMORPG is still totally unplayable even after months of work).
On the other side, looking for another game is always possible and seem quite wise. However, I am scared that without a tangible task/activity to focus on, the waiting time may scatter our group.

Don't take this wrong, but I think one word describes it well...Finaly
It has been quite clear for some time, that this project was slowly getting to
this...sooner or later.
So...the next step ?
For how mush longer can we use the name Ryzom, was thinking of © and TM ?
If it's needed, I can translate the document to Swedish, and ask Linux.Se &
Linux.Nu to publish it. |

probably for not much long and it's the beauty of it, ryzom.org is a temporary autonomous zone were teams can meet in a neutral territory that will disappear because of trademark issues with the new ryzom owner.
lets hope by this time ryzom.org will have been usefull as a meeting point and maybe going forward in joint developpement work.
so feel free to speak about it and about the teams rumbling here.

I will be presenting our story so far at the linux.conf.au conference in Sydney tomorrow.
Slides are still being worked on (plenty of english mistakes I am sure) but feel free to comment and or modify them.
I should have the time to download any addition anybody made here before going to the conference tomorrow 7am in Australia (17h monday in France, 18h GMT). I may be able to get some stuff even later if I can find an internet access at the conference.
Please post comments.
The pdf of the slides and their latex source code is available one the wiki:

It seems all good (except perhaps a s/Open Source/Free Software/ ;p). It should be a great presentation.
Good luck, and let us know how it worked out, and what where the reactions! And if somebody is recording the conf (audio or video), that would be great to show it to everyone. :) |

I am about to get on my way to the conference. I'll see what can do about a video. In any case, I'll post back here my impressions.
Thank you for the comment Xavier, I'll do the swap :)

Linuxconf Australia was very interesting. There is an impressive density of geeks per square meters there.
Most of the presentation, including ours, were reccorded and should be published on the web soonish.
One suggestion made to the talk was that many games fall apart before maturity and never make it to the market. Even incomplete, they may be a good base to start with. The question is how do we find such games? How do we assess the quality of the material? And the next barrier is to convice the owner of the code to sell for a reasonable price.
The open souring of Second Life was one reccurent subject with some people already submitting patches. The rumor says that the server code will not be opened before a year of two.
Alystan
PS: maybe this thread should be moved to VCA general. This whole forum may need a merge there actually. I can't see the point of having two different general english language forums. |

Cool :) Let us know when it is available, I'll definitely want to watch it. ;p

Yup; as discussed in another thread, evaluating the code base is an important issue, even when the game has been released and played. A complete evaluation should probably an important condition before considering buying a game. However, there may be situations where this isn't possible, we thus need to decide what to do in such cases. Pray? Or say no? It would probably have to be decided on a case by case basis, but I'd like to know what the general feeling is on this topic.

Yes, it sound realistic to say this won't happen immediately (unless somebody creates a good SL server emulator, which could force Linden Lab to move more quickly than expected). Considering that they have to move SL-specific stuff out of the server and open-source (or, more likely, replace) Havok, this won't happen within the month. One or two years is probably a reasonable expectation.

Done moving the thread. For merging the forum, I'm not sure this would really be useful; personaly, I see the Ryzom.org forum as an archive, prettry much like the Ryzom.org website itself. Perhaps it could be better labeled as such. What do you think? |

Sure you do ... but not as much as I would like you not to :). Anyway, even if the presentation skills needs to be improved, I think it was a good thing to do it. If anything else, I learned something.

As you said, it has to be on a case by case basis. The reason beeing that in any bet the important factor is the ratio between the amount you bet (the risk) and the potential gain.
Our financial ressources are limited and therefore precious. If somebody present us with the opportunity of buying the source code of a game for an insignifican amount of money. I'd say go for it. Even if it is crap, there is nothing much to loose and we can still free the code. Now for any significant amount of money, we better do a deep evaluation, even if this require signing an NDA (Non Disclosure Agreement) for one of us to have a look at the code for example.
In the case of Ryzom, we knew the game was working, we knew it was based on the NeL and some people here used to work for Nevrax. There was no doubt it would have been suitable, so any amount of money we could gather would have been justified.

I guess you are right, it look more like an archive. I reckon you should tag it that way and maybe lock it to make sure new topic are forwarded in the new forums.
Is there a need for a German/Italian/Spanish/Other language forum?

The question (at least for a French board) has been raised already, so I guess it would be good to try having a VCA French board. This would be more consistent too. And if anyone asks for a forum in his own language, I'll open one.
If nobody objects this, I'll do that, add an "archive" tag to the Ryzom.org forums. Perhaps not locking them yet, as there is an initiative to discuss with Gameforge (French boards mainly), we may want to see what it gives beforehand, even if it is unlikely to succeed. |
