In the wake of our losing the bid to buy Ryzom, there has been a lot of discussion on these forums concerning the pros and cons of continuing the effort by either creating a new game from scratch or trying to make a bid for the next game that goes belly up. Yes, the potential to buy Ryzom was an excellent opportunity, since that would have provided a fully developed system up front with all the bells and whistles included. That would have been absolutely ideal because it would provide not only the code and artwork needed for such an undertaking, but it would have also provided the common vision every project needs: Ryzom itself.
Well, if this project is going to succeed it cannot afford to lose its momentum. It must develop a common vision very quickly, or lose all. Because of that, the choice between waiting for an indeterminate period to try to buy another game that goes bankrupt or starting to develop a new game from scratch is clear. One choice retains the collective momentum, the other does not. An entire community is simply not going to maintain its enthusiasm waiting for the off-chance that they might actually win the next bid, whenever that is. The community's momentum can only continue through the action of its members. So, in my opinion, there is only one choice. We must develop a new game.
Setting aside the virtues of various 3d engines and other technical considerations, if we are going to start a new game from scratch, we need a vision around which the community can rally. Because this is an Open Source project, it needs to be a vision that can be understood by all and built upon. It needs to be a vision that can be expanded indefinately beyond what the original creators imagined. It must also be a vision that can be forked by those who wish to do so in the future in favor of their own ideas, and it needs to provide those who want to do so with a reasonable starting point for a wide range of possibilities.
I am offering that. In this thread, I offered to release Legendary Quest, a pen-and-paper RPG I created, under a Creative Commons license if the community felt that it would provide a good starting point. I received a couple of very nice replies (thank you for those, BTW). But, overall, the offer was largely ignored. (You can download Legendary Quest from here.)
Now, it is quite possible that this community will not find Legendary Quest sufficiently inspiring as a common vision. That is fine. I would love to see LQ developed as a MMORPG, but I am not here to try to force it on anyone. However, before I give up, I at least want to make sure the community as a whole understands the vision so that if you all decline the offer, at least you understand what it is that you are declining.
First and foremost, Legendary Quest is a Fantasy Role-Playing Game. It is a game that is based entirely on authentic European and Mediterranean folklore and mythology. I did a ridiculous amount of research in its development over the course of the past 20 years to focus it exclusively on ancient myth and legend. It consists of a collection of seven game books, totaling over 1400 pages worth of materials. Adopting LQ would provide the following:
1) As a fully developed pen-and-paper game, it essentially provides a 1400 page requirements document telling developers what rules they need to code and telling artists what artwork they need to create.
2) As a game based on authentic mythology and folklore, it can be expanded beyond what is already available in the game books by others while maintaining the same vision. This can be done simply by performing the necessary research. For example, the mythologies of the Americas, the Orient, or other cultures would fit perfectly into the vision. (I focused on European and Mediterranean folklore and mythology only because I had to narrow the focus in order to do a reasonably thorough job on the cultures. Even then, there is a huge amount left untapped in those areas as well.)
3) Basing a MMORPG on authentic mythology would allow the artwork to be re-used in other projects in the future. Computer models of a pegasus, unicorn, troll, cyclops, elf, or gnome could be used in future mythological or fantasy projects having nothing to do with LQ. And, I'm sure that computer models of buildings with authentic ancient or medieval architectures of various cultures would have an even broader scope of use.
Now, I was planning on releasing 8th edition LQ under a Creative Commons license sometime in the future. But, that would be at least a year from now, and probably more. The only reason I would go to the effort of releasing 7th edition (the current one) under Creative Commons would be if it could be productively used here. (Not all of LQ could be released, actually. The artwork would have to be stripped out and I would have to obtain permission from some of the other authors to release the portions they developed. I personally wrote 80%-90% of the materials, so I can guarantee that most of the game could be released this way.)
So, my question is: Can LQ provide the common vision this group needs?
If not, we need to quickly find another vision to adopt or lose all hope at success. |

I see everyone trying to create a new project, buy another game ... But it is not the original purpose of ryzom.org. Don't forget that the pledges are only aviable for Ryzom. And by the way, Ryzom is not yet lost. We can talk with Gameforge and negociate.
And also, something important, we are all here for ryzom. if we change the game we focus on, we may lose many people not interested. For example, I have nothing against Legendary Quest (which I don't know) but I don't have time to spend on it. I mean, Ryzom interested me because the world was interresting AND because it was already playable.
And iIf it was to create a new game, I would rather spend it creating a game based on the Wheel of Time...
I think, before focusing on a new project, we should really try all we can to free Ryzom as we didn't lost it yet. And if it is for a new project, why not using the new website http://www.virtualcitizenship.org/ which is less focused on Ryzom. |

The pledges are only available to buy the full souce and artwork for Ryzom and Open Source all of it. That is the assumption under which people made their pledges. Anything deviating from that invalidates the pledge. If ryzom .org can somehow negotiate those terms with Gameforge, then I am absolutely for it. However, I believe that to be a pipe dream. Has Gameforge indicated any interest at all in doing anything like this?
mildred wrote:

Different people are here for different reasons. I am not here for Ryzom in particular. I am here because there is a possibility for the Open Source community to gain a truly free and open MMOG. If that's Ryzom, great. If that's something else, that's great too. It certainly doesn't have to be Legendary Quest either. I am just proposing that as a starting point.
mildred wrote: And iIf it was to create a new game, I would rather spend it creating a game based on the Wheel of Time...
There's one very serious problem with that suggestion. The Wheel of Time (which would certainly provide an awesome foundation for a MMORPG) has not been offered by the copyright holders as a contribution to this project.
mildred wrote: I think, before focusing on a new project, we should really try all we can to free Ryzom as we didn't lost it yet.
Again, I think you are being overly optimistic about us not having lost Ryzom. The highest bidder has been declared. It wasn't us. Let's move on.
On the other hand, I don't want to present a distraction from this project's goals. I am honestly trying to help. If the leaders of this project believe that my proposal is merely going to fragment the community, then I'll withdraw my offer and the community can get back to focusing on Ryzom. |

That's an incredible offer. I read your other thread, but I don't think I even said Thank You.

But it's more than I signed up for. "Throwing money at something" is a lot easier than actually pledging time and effort. I just don't have the time to give to a project like this.
That's not to say that I wouldn't be supportive of you and others building a mmorpg off of your game, I think it would be an tremendous foundation; I'm just saying that I won't take a very active part in the development. |

I think you post come too early in the discussion. We do not know which kind of game we want to do. So speaking about rules set and background is not very useful at the moment. However you proposition has been heard.
You post seam a little naive concerning the artworks. Graphics and animations are our main issue. Making 3D models and animation need lot of time and expertise. We lack both of them. So it is possible that we chose a background that only need simple models and not a background where there are pegasus, medusa and griphon because we need to develop specialized and not trivial animation for each of them.
I do not say that we should not use Legendary Quest. I just want to say that it to early because we need to resolve some issue that can have serious effect on the background. So it is not possible for the moment to say anything about the using your work or not. |

I do realize that this point is only tangentially related, but we really need to get confirmation as to whether or not the pledges currently allocated to purchasing Ryzom could be used to create a new MMORPG. In the case of the three largest contributors, we should be able to confer with them directly. As for the other contributors, perhaps we could ask that on the front page of this website, and provide a webpage to confirm such a decision. I do know that if such an interface were available, I would authorize my own contribution to go to the project. Likely others would as well, and that could give us a basis for begining the project.
We have to know what resources are available to us before we can begin. From my experience, I believe that we can accomplish this, with even part of the resources volunteered by the largest contributors here, if they are willing.

I believe that we should focus on creating at least at first, a basis for other games to be created. A critical part of any game is the underlying calculations of the game play engine. I do thank John for his impressive offer. Because what we create will be under an open source liscense, it will be possible (and highly encouraged) for others in the future to adapt what we have done. (2d and 3d games included.)
By chipping in together, we can all create something bigger than what we could individually.
I truly look forward to seeing something amazing created here. |

I have decided to join the Aurora B project. Aurora B is a spin-off of the Ryzom effort that is trying to create a new Open MMORPG from scratch, since the purchase of Ryzom itself didn't work out. The decision has not yet been made that we are going to base this new game off of Legendary Quest, but it is being seriously considered. You can visit the SourceForge site at:
http://sourceforge.net/projects/aurorab/
We also chat online at:
irc.freenode.org on channel #aurorab
Anyone and everyone is welcome to join us.
Since this is a spin-off, rather than ryzom.org itself, I would not feel comfortable adding my name to the ryzom.org list.
Thanks for the vote of confidence, though.

A lot of this data can be used cross-wise between these projects(graphics, text, and code). Speakng of which, John, do you mind if I take your game system and make a C++ framework library out of it? It will be something portable that could be used in both projects. |

At least, now we know about the Aurora B project. Thanks, but understand that I am not really happy about the new. Can you at least present your project?

Well, this is not the problem, we can work with other projects. The problem is that they just fork without giving good reason. This is bad and this do not encourage me to believe that they want to cooperate with other people. |

Woa! I guess I owe you guys a big apology. I was asked to join the Aurora B project a little while ago, as a spin-off of ryzom intended to create a free and open MMORPG. This didn't surprise me, really, since I knew that ryzom.org was splitting up into three factions:
1) Keep trying to negotiate with Gameforge to open up Ryzom
2) Re-obtain pledges to try and buy some other game that goes bankrupt.
3) Create a new game from scratch.
So, when I was told of Aurora B, I just assumed that an announcement had been made here somewhere concerning its creation and I missed it. Since that time, I haven't been paying much attention here, because my attention has been focused over there. So, I never even noticed the fact that there hasn't actually been an announcement posted here.
sdahan wrote: Well, this is not the problem, we can work with other projects. The problem is that they just fork without giving good reason. This is bad and this do not encourage me to believe that they want to cooperate with other people.
I had no intention of forking, and I don't think anyone on the Aurora B project had that intention either. The reason I wasn't willing to put my name on the ryzom.org list is because my understanding is that ryzom.org has evolved into being the faction that is trying to negotiate with Gameforge rather than try to build a new game from scratch. And, I am interested in creating a new game.
So, please understand that we're just a group of geeks that have been discussing the various issues involved with creating a MMORPG, checking out various technologies, and putting together the websites and repositories necessary for such a project. I'm not exactly sure how the group initially got together (other than having met here), and I am confident that the lack of an announcement here was an oversite (a big one, to be sure). But, please be assured that it was an oversight and not some nefarious plot to split the community. I feel extremely wierd being the one to inadvertently make "the announcement", not having actually been the one to initiate the project in the first place.
And, I agree, that it would be a huge mistake to fork the projects. Especially since there is still not really anything to fork at this point. We don't have any code written nor any artwork created.
So, with my hat in my hand, what can we all do to put things right?
 |

OK, sorry all it's my fault I should have told everyone about the project but we've been quite busy. the reason the forums where never posted was because it was arranged between a group of people on the irc channel.
Any efforts we can collaborate on we will be sure to help with. |

These tasks are not mutually incompatible; There are enough people here that we can investigate possible avenues with Gameforge, search for a possible new game to buy, and check on the feasability of maing a new game from scratch. We can even do most of these things at the same time.
It's the wonderful advantage of having many eyes and hands. |

What we have here is a perfect example for why IRC/IM should never be used for decision making.
Reasons IRC/IM is BAAAAAAAAAD:
- People get left out of the loop. Not everyone keeps the same hours. Not everyone even "hangs out" with any instant messaging window. Some of the team will be present, some wont.
- There is no record. At some point, six months or a year down the road, you will want to go back through a discussion. Someone new to a team should be able to go through the important discussions that passed before they joined the team. You can't do any of this with a chat session.
- "We talked on IRC and..." is another way of saying "fuck you". It tells everyone who was not present in the IRC conversation that their input is irrelevant or unwelcome. That may not be what you intend to say, but you are saying it between the lines.
Chat has its place - scheduled meetings with someone designated to take minutes and post them for record. I actually have experience being on the - I guess "live team" is the proper word - of a community (NWN) world that ran well, had a loyal playerbase and went all to hell when one of the admins started making decisions on IM. |

Honestly, I can't agree more about the conducting of major decisions on IRC/IM. It is a place where many are unable to go at all times. I work 12 hours a day two days on and two days off, and those days I work, all I really do is eat and sleep and maybe check my email, and that is about it. I myself would be miffed if a major decision was made in my absence without my knowledge beforehand on a project I was a member of. |

I can certainly see your point. I would prefer to use forums and/or wiki's myself. The Aurora B SourceForge project has forums we can use, and I know that folks are checking out various wiki programs to see which would be best. So, we're getting there, and we really do want everyone's input. Hammering out how we are all going to communicate is of paramount importance in any project. I'm glad we're having this discussion, so we can fix these problems up front.
As far as I know, there haven't been any unalterable decisions made yet. I do know that OGRE is being very seriously considered as the graphics engine, though. I've also taken a first stab at a possible "world history" for the game world, but that hasn't been given the thumbs-up by anyone either. Everything is still very much up in the air. |

Yeah, I realize everything is pretty much up in the air still. Ogre is a viable graphics solution, I will not argue that, and with the art pipeline I tend to use, I can fairly easily produce 3d content for use in Ogre which isn't really a pain. Ogre as well is a fairly well documented project which is another plus.
The world history I think would be one of the hardest things to agree upon, as people enjoy too many different styles. Myself, I'm honestly tired of every MMO coming out being swords and magic, and long for a good sci-fi game, but that is just me. For helping out in the long run though, it matters not what the final outcome is, as I enjoy doing what I do anyhow.
With everything up in the air still, it leaves too much room for doubt, and honestly, something needs to start coming together soon, at least a centralized location where everyone can congregate to start information gathering and brainstorming together as a whole team. The Aurora B on sourceforge, though there are forums there and whatnot, as a whole, sourceforge really isn't designed to be a great place to do the collaboration except in the use of its cvs. For team discussions and such, it lacks many abilities and whatnot that could be important. Off hand, I can't name anything which kind of makes me sound hypocritical actually, but I haven't touched on Sourceforge in quite some time, but its layout is something that isn't well suited except for distributing releases of a project from what I've seen in past voyages there. |

Except that the forums for Aurora B are empty; not a single post as of the time I write this. (I was curious to see what, if any, overlap there was between the Aurora B discussions and everyone else) The wiki's don't exist yet and there is no mailing list defined either. You simply can't take everyones' opinions into account when the main medium of communication is chat. For that, you need an asynchronous form of communication. |

*sigh*
Cayle, I understand where you are coming from. I really do. Please be patient. We are just in the process of getting these things set up. As far as the forums go, I am aware that there is nothing there yet. In fact, there may never be if we decide to use some service other than SourceForge to host the forums. As far as IRC is concerned, it may not be the ideal mode of communication. But, it happens to be the way that those who initiated Aurora B started talking to one another. Obviously, not everyone agrees with how things have evolved, but I think the Aurora B team should be commended for their efforts. (I say "they" only because I haven't contributed anything in the way of infrastructure, and so don't feel I deserve the same commendation as the real worker-bees.)
As far as the wiki is concerned, it has just been set up:
http://aurorab.sourceforge.net/wiki/
As of this writing, there's nothing really there yet either. But, it is a common venue with which we can communicate. I hope you all decide to join us in pushing the project forward. |

| That is the unfortunate byproduct of starting something new unfortunately. It always takes a little while to start getting things going. |

IRC chat logs are being committed to SVN, they have been for a while for sanity's sake.
I've just been reading the context to the split that has happened, it seems there are lots of interested parties in a new MMO game and we were just in different places taking to different people.
I'm going to keep an eye out for progress of the different groups because at least I can share information around; it will reduce the duplication of research etc, if we all come to the same conclusion then there is only ego which stops us moving in the same direction with the same project; if not then more that one project while not desirable is required. |

Yeah, I've been a bit of a grumpy old man about the communication thingy and I'll shut up now. :P Yes, these things do take time. Don't take my grumpiness as an unwillingness to work with the AuroraB folks. In fact, I'd like to know what the overlap is in everyone’s visions so that we can decide on the scope of what we do together. What is the vision of AuroraB? Is it a world or a framework? If rules and lore are included, then it is the former and would be a satellite of a main group. I tried browsing the CVS, but found nothing. Do you AB guys have a summary of what you are up to?
At some point, we should move the main discussion forum away from ryzom.org, as we have deviated from Xavier's vision and are freeloading on their forums. We can remain here for now, transfer the discussions to a mailing list (something I'm not fond of because it spams my inbox and makes it hard to keep track of threads) or migrate to a new forum. As an admin on the PA forums, I could create a subforum or block of subforums to serve as a temporary home. I'd be reluctant to do so on a permanent basis as PA is a specific world/ruleset as I would not want to convey a false impression that is is the central effort. Like AuroraB, it is a satellite (if the main effort coalesces). |

To rent a space in a web hotel, is not so expensive after all. I can make that
donation alone, and I have lookt into some company's already.
Linux.Se:
Provides access to PHP 5.2 and MySQL 5.1, 1 gig of storage and 5 gig traffic per
month. This is more than we need at the moment. I have been in contact with
the owner of this company before, and he is quite flexible to specific solutions
and willing to give more help if it is a open source project. |

| I can get space without any problem, and I could get a website up and running in a matter of minutes. In fact, I think I'll do that out of sheer lack of anything greater to do tonight. |

| If you can do that KrYoS, it would be great. I get a vibe from the VC threads that we are kind of intruding... |

| Well, got the domain and hosting working, but because I'm at work, I can't download something and then upload it to the site to get it working, so in about 8 hours or so when I get off work, I'll set up the website and such with a basic default look for the time being, and we'll go from there. So in 8 hours, I'll be getting www.rabidsquirrelmafia.com Ready for our use. |
