Hello everybody, after a little discussion with Xavier, and because I am the most stubborn person on Earth (Bragging? Me?... well, ok), we are suggesting something that only depends on you.

The question I have asked somewhere else by the way ( http://www.ryzom.org/forums/viewtopic.php?p=2382#2382 ) is as follows:

Do you want to collaborate with Gameforge, in order to develop a synergy between the Ryzom.org project, and the society that bought the game?... And what kind of collaboration?

The guiding lines are weak, but they can be summed up as follows:
-Ryzom being as it is (see link above), we could suggest the opening of part of the code without touching its heart and without asking to create private servers.
-We can ask for the opening of part of the lore, maybe the complete lore, especially this metaplot which is its guiding line and the heart of the game's theme.
-We could put forward a mean to collaborate on the animation of the game itself, while updating the storyline and the metaplot of Ryzom.
-Basically, we're suggesting to take the best that Gameforge and Ryzom.org have to offer.

But this seems to be like selling our soul to the devil, considering the views of a lot of you. So, do you agree to collaborate or not?

P.S: Translation of linked post coming up soon...

But I would like to talk here a little bit about what Ryzom was supposed to be, and what it was. So, if you allow me, I'm going to talk a little bit about history. If there are any mistakes here, there are certainly people among us who can correct me.

Ryzom is a niche game, focused mainly on the social aspect. It has no innovations which could make it competitive against any other modern MMOG.
Its strength lies in the notion, which is its nature: the metaplot. The metaplot is a universe based on a storyline, and not a static universe, whose evolution depends on technical and geographical add-ons.
This storyline implies a beginning and an announced end. This end, the metaplot of Ryzom, is theoretically the meaning of existence for every player's character: Understand why he's here, what world he's in, become aware of the masked realities behind the veil of Atys, and become an actor.

<translation paused ^^ >

Yup.

Personally, I see three potential projects emerging here: people who want to try to buy a MMO anyway (including Ryzom if there is a new opportunity), people willing to work on Ryzom and discuss with Gameforge, people willing to develop a MMORPG from scratch.

Since FS projects can very well cohabit, I think it would be smart to let each of them a chance. We could have the people willing to work on Ryzom with Gameforge on ryzom.org, the people willing to investigate the buyout of a MMORPG on virtualcitizenship.org, and the MMORPG development project on another URL; the Virtual Citizenship Association being the glue and shared ground of all three projects.

I'll try to post something more in depth once I have better thought about it, but it gives an idea of what could be done.

There is a problem with the poll ... There is already one in the french forum (and many people already voted on this one), and now there is one here ... so nothing prevents me (or other peoples) for voting twice.
I suggest everyone voting in the same poll, maybe the french one since it is the first. And for non french speaking people, remember that "oui" means yes, "non" means no and "Je m'en bat l'oeil avec une morue fraîche." is a complicated way to say that you don't care

I exposed my opinion in here:
http://www.ryzom.org/forums/viewtopic.php?p=2202#2202

I think that starting a project from the scratch is not viable in our circumstances, the best bet is to buy an already finished game, and Ryzom is one of that best posibilities (there are many other games but are too much expensive). I (like most of forum readers and pledge donators) do not know what is going on behind the lines, so I think that you the people that are near to the successes can clear up this and make us know if gameforge may agree with our interest to make Ryzom free software. We can expect the worst, but at least we have to confirm it.

About the collaboration, is the game is not going to be free software, I cannot understand what kind of collaboration can we hold. And of course if such collaboration takes place there will be no money implied from pledges.

I agree with you, and I think you're interested in virtualcitizenship.org, not the other two projects.

So am I. But it doesn't mean others should be forbidden to try; if we were to forbid people from dreaming of doing the impossible, ryzom.org would never have existed. ;p So I would be happy that we host all three projects, and I'll even be glad to help whenever I can.

well, i do see some posibilities in collaborating with gameforge. NeL is already opensource, we might be able to agree on a colaboration on server infrastructure, etc...

they might agree on creative commons for lore and artwork. maybe even collaborate in making it easy to jump from one game to the other.

it could be neat actually. specially if one game concentrates on different types of gameplay. ryzom could keep the direction it has been taking with PvP, etc... and we could have a game with no lvls and concentrated on politics, content game, etc...

they might be interested in opensourcing it anyways (for 170.000€ ;) and be the first company who tries to work on a opensource game. i dont think they would have anything to loose.

what if our game becomes more popular? or they keep including our game ideas in their game, keeping people from coming over to ours? we would have to think of all these posibilites and posible solutions before we go on though.

i would try it though :D

Opening the lore would be a really bad idea in my opinion. I wasn't too interested in that part from the original idea.

Opensourcing the client (a Mac/Linux client) would be really nice. But it's in ownGameforges interest to do so.

Unless Gameforge is willing to completely open source the software, which is terribly unlikely, I vote against collaboration.

I'd be willing to add time and talent to a project, maybe working on something low level like network code that could go anyplace. I would want it to be my gift to the community and in that, It'd need to be GPL'ed.

slightly off topic and I'm saying this in a coach type of way...
I don't understand the "can't do" mentality as it relates to programming something. If we picked up Ryzom would people be saying, "we can't expand Ryzom.. to hard.. why try"? We really need to check ourselves when we get that stuck in our minds - no invention or innovation was created by saying we can't do it.

After reading sfb's post, I think one of the most useful things we could get by collaborating with Gameforge might be the "MMORPG Skeleton + Tools" package.

That's why I think we should at least try.

But now another interesting solution seems to be Seed by Runestone... :D
See link in signature. :P

edit: Horrible mistake corrected. Thanks nFriedly. :)

*Clarification: that's runestone not runescape

Slight difference between the two ;P
