I think you should consider buying Seed.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Seed_%28computer_game%29
From wikipedia
Quote:
Seed is a massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) developed by Runestone Game Development. Aiming for a radically different experience than most other games in the genre, the game focuses on character interaction and politics to the extent that combat is entirely removed from the design.

Beta testing started on February 1st, 2006. Open beta testing started on April 25th, 2006. The game was released to the public on May 2nd, 2006.

As of September 28th, 2006, Runestone decided to file a bankruptcy petition to the court of Aarhus, Denmark. A public statement[1] explained that the lack of money was caused by failing to achieve a partnership deal with publishers and MMO companies.

oooh, I like that - I'm more of a sci-fi fan than dragon slaying guy, and I loved that comic book cell shaded look!

I would strongly support buying and freeing seed.

Nice find Theis! how many more abandoned games like this are out there?

It's a sad story for this game. :(

But maybe we can save it!
I like their idea of a story-driven MMOG without combat. :)
And the graphic novel style is looks really good.

Well I'm totally unsure of what I'm saying, but in Wikipedia I see relation with Qube Software engine.

I think seed is build on Qube engine, so if Qube do not run either for bankrupt buying seed will bring us an empty empty nutshell.

I'm a former player of Seed, and I should say you that seed could have been a freet game ifthey had the time and the money.
Seed was realese to early because of investors, and Runestone did not had the time to end it.

If we can do something for Seed, it would be great. But I fear it is to late for this game.

I did never play this game, but, like we say in France:
"pt1, j'kiff grave les graphismes"
(very) approximative translation : WoO00OoOow!!!!!!!! grafism R cooOOo0OolLllll111ยงยง

Is there really no fight at all ?

Escapist did an interview with the CEO http://www.escapistmagazine.com/issue/70/18

Seed was released very prematurely and the game was very niched. I subbed for it until the end but the gameplay was missing, some vital parts didn't come until the last month before they closed it down. It's a nice idea for a game though.

It would take much more work to get it running. No idea who owns the code now, the devs said they hoped they could buy it cheap eventually.

Seed is strongly tied to a proprietary engine they have bought. I
can't remember its name.
I think nothing can be make free except the lore and graphics.

Yea, the graphics engine is this qube software one which I think is proprietary. I didn't think about that when I first posted. Still, there are some good parts to it:

-seed has what they claim to be some pretty smart ai: it's supposed to be able to carry on an intelligent conversation about anything or fill a humans part in the storyline
-a story line generator (I'm not sure how that works, but they hyped it a lot)
-some awesome artwork / animation
-working client & server code

also, this has been pointed out, there are a number of open source 3d engines

so, all said, I still like the idea of freeying seed, but I admit that there would be some work to bring it back to life.

The one of the biggest things for an RPG nowdays *is* the graphics. If we did nothing but buy or have built a good 3d graphcs library, I believe the rest would fall into place.

Only one problem with this. Art & AI without an engine leaves us basically where we all are right now - no where.

There are already open source engines, open source AI's, etc.

Unfortunately, most of them don't play well together.
