As requested on the French boards, I've setup a wiki, to be used for any purpose it can serve...

Hm, by the way, are there many members of ryzom.org who don't speak English? Because I'd wager most anglophone members do not speak French (I speak a very very rudimentary french myself only).

It would be nice to add quick links in the sidebar of the wiki to quickly switch between the French and the English versions of the wiki.
Another solution would be to create "interwiki links" in the wiki just as on the real wikipedia for switching between different languages.

I mean for the moment there are only two articles of course, but well if it isn't something to hard to do...

P.S: Already started translating (even the "I didn't understand" parts! :P )

edit: And it would also be nice to "Set $wgLogo to the URL path to your own logo image."
Does anybody have a logo we could use?

Do you think it's necessary to create versions in other languages or not?
I could do german if necessary.

You should put a link on the ryzom.org homepage navigation.

Yup; it was already on the top bar, but I've just added it to the left menubar too. I also used the opportunity to put back the link to the chat, which had mysteriously disappeared.

In fact, since the wiki begins to be used, it would be great to have someone who is willing to take care of it. Is there someone with a bit of mediawiki experience with some spare time? :D

If needed, I can help out with it. I'm sure ya can get my reg. email from here, or e-mail off of the wiki. ;)

Just let me know,

Edit: Oh, or by ICQ since I noticed the thing...

In this case, a Interwiki setup would be best, but 'how' is the question... Doing it by VHost would be painful ({en,de,fr,xx,yy,zz}.ryzom.org/wiki/ .. etc). :)

It would be possible (and maybe better?) to setup custom NameSpaces for the languages (see Custom namespaces). Then setup the Interwiki links to goto the Namespaces. Setting up the Namespaces and IW links means muckin' with the PHP code and DB though. :P

As for the navigation menu:
Xavier, you can change it by editing the page:
http://www.ryzom.org/wiki/index.php/MediaWiki:Sidebar

You'll have to do that since only a SysOp can modify it (Protected page).

I have never administered a wiki site, but I would be happy to learn. ;)

Otherwise, altough there is a FAQ on the main site, I suggest creating one in the wiki where we could organize all the questions and answers found on the forum or on the IRC.

edit:
And I just created the FAQ.
For the moment, I'll just copy the contents of the main site.

re-edit:
added TODO list in the discussion part of the main page. ;)

I've made a "beta" version in Spanish of wiki so it's open to modifications (:

[Edited]
These two pages needs revisions since I left some sentences and expressions that I wasn't sure how to translate in English. FAQ is half done.

Alright, you seem motivated, it motivated me to create the multilingual wikis. ;p Now everything is on http://wiki.ryzom.org/ with English, French German and Spanish versions. The interlingual links are configured, like on Wikipedia. See http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Help:Interwiki_links#Interwiki_links_use to learn how to you them. I've also changed the home page, to show directly the content, I've copied/paste the home in each language, with interlingual links between each of them. Remains to clean things up, since there are still the old fr/es/de pages on the en wiki, and there is only the homepage on the fr/de/es wikis.

That's work for you. ;p

What remains now is to give you admin rights. Tell me for which language(s) you want to be an admin, go create account(s) there, and tell me what is your account name here. And I'll do that for you. :)

I'm not a graphic artist, but I made this as a logo (just added "free" on it... ^^):

Here's the original image if somebody wants to improve it:

I also finished the german translation yesterday.
It would be nice if somebody could check it for errors or not so good translations . ;)

note:The slight color difference is probably due to a useless jpg->bmp->jpg conversion I did. I was trying to pick colors from the text in the image, but didn't use it in the end.

Wait a minute. I do not know where the picture come from. But I suspect that you are doing something illegal: the ryzom game is not open source yet.

I found the picture with a simple google image search on "ryzom".

Is it illegal to take images from google image and modify them? :o
I am not selling or claiming ownership of this image in any way.
And most images on the web don't have any "copy protection" on them, so I never considered reusing pictures found on the web as something illegal.
(Yes, I noticed that sometimes, there's an author name or a website name on them, but I don't remember ever removing something like that. And since I'm not an artist, I rareley ever modify an image.)

What about the videos on the main site? Don't they use images from the game?
OK, so they are maybe from animations created using a legally owned copy of the game, but the 3D models in the game are also some kind of artists creation.

Anyway, I'm not very aware of all the legal stuff on copying, etc...
This image was just a suggestion, since I have not seen any other so far, and there still isn't any logo on the wiki.
If it is somehow illegal, then don't use it.

I suspect sdahan thought this picture was extracted from Ryzom client files :p

no nevrax simply own the right to use this file. The ability to download it freely isn't the ability to modify or use it freely.

I see more and more new solutions and ideas being proposed on this forum.
So I decided to start organizing it a little bit on the Wiki.

And Pierre Maumont seemed to have had the idea first. ;)
(And I happily added "Seed" to his candidates table. :D )

But I still continued the work and made 3 main parts:
1)Try to buy an MMO game anyway (including Ryzom if there is a new opportunity)
2)Work on Ryzom and discuss with Gameforge
3)Develop a MMORPG from scratch

(freely inspired from one of Xavier's posts about the directions being taken :P )

For the moment, I left everything on the main page:
http://wiki.ryzom.org/en/index.php/Main_Page

Maybe we can create separate articles for each of the solutions, in case things get more complex.

I would like to thank sfb and Cayle for their detailed posts with technical infos and hope they don't mind being quoted in the wiki. ;)
I also linked to a post by augmento, altough the solutions he proposes are not so free.

There are still a lot of things to improve, but adapting or linking to the posts on the forum was the fastest way for me.
And of course, it also encourages people to discuss things on the forums.
The wiki should only be there to organize everything.
