I'm looking for suggestions to name the company who would be buying the assets of Ryzom from the tribunal. Last time we went with Ryzonel, but it was chosen in a hurry, and I'm pretty sure we could find something better. Any idea?

NB: If some want to translate the question on the French or German board, then keep updating the threads with answers posted elswhere, it would allow us to test a form of inter-community debate.

Just posted it on the German board.

- Freezom (average stereotype french person pronouncing 'freedom', or combined with 'ryzom', etc)
- Flying Yubodragon (that's what yubodragons do, fly)
- Entrez un text ici (english patch notes, 00079)
- Xarven ('nevrax' reversed)

Adrastos is somewhat meaningful, but has probably already been used/trademarked. Could be modified to Adrystos, however...

Why not just called the World Builders Toolkit?

Surely that would be simple enough to translate into the other languages and get the meaning across.

Why not just use Virtual Citizenship Association? Is that not the name your using now.

Hi by the way. ;)

The VCA and the company are two different entities: the VCA is us, the community, while the company is VCA + Mekensleep + Valentin Lacambre, and will be used to buy the assets from the liquidator, run the servers and hire some employees.

Personally, I like "Libre Studio"; "libre" means "free as in freedom" in Spanish and French, thus avoiding the free/open pitfall.

I get it now.

Plus one for Libre Studio, that seems like a suitable name. :)

I'd prefer "Open Ryzom", as others have said, "free" has the connotation of "gratuit", which it would not be. I think I could settle for "Ryzom Libre", but I don't really see where the "Studio" would come from...

EDIT: orthography

Does Ryzom need to be in the name? This is a company name not the name of the game. In the end the name can be anything, it's not the name that matters, it's what the company and people behind the name can do that matters.

+1

Btw, on the French boards somebody found out that "Libre Studio" is already taken and appears on Google. So another suggestion is to name it "Libera Studio" - "libera" is the Esperanto translation of "libre"/"free".

I guess it wouldn't need to be in the name, but I feel it would be nice to have it there, since it is all about Ryzom in the end, is it not? Or maybe call it "Atys Libre" ;)

EDIT:

Thinking a bit more about it, I think it really should be there, as the rhizome symbolises the community as well... sprouting where everything seemed lost...

While I understand this concept...I'm wondering if this company might not do other things in the future besides save our wonderful game? If so, then having Ryzom in the name might be limiting in a way. Can someone give a yes/no/maybe about that? Libera Studio is nice, I like the thought behind it.

Maybe. While I can't think of anything specific right now, we don't know what could come up in the way. So, I see no reason to say no.

Suggestion: Pick one of the favorite animals and add a suffix to it.

KincherWare, YuboWare, etc.

1. Flying Yubos Collective
2. Online Libre Collective
3. Green Roots Collective

I think Collective or something similar would be a better description than Studio, as it describes more the open source idea. But I don't know the legal definitions of either....

goodluck!

Anything -Soft:

- Yubosoft
- Cutesoft
...

Arts:

- Yubo Arts
- Cute Arts
...

Interactive

- Yubo Interactive
- PrimeRoots Interactive

Games:

- Gingo Games

Or to keep it simple, why not use the existing R² (Ryzom Ring),
such as R² Interactive, R² Arts, R² Entertainment whatsoever....
(R² : Power to the players!)

Just use your imagination!!! ;)

The word Amaranth(us) is derived from the greek Amarantos, meaning "one that does not wither" or "the never-fading"; a good representation of the effort in my opinion.

Yubosoft sounds nice, but it reminds me too much of Ubisoft.... yet another french company.

And Ubisoft is a game-killer. As far as I know, they are the reason Myst Online: URU Live was shut down in the beta of its original iteration. In conversation, Yubosoft could easily be misheard as Ubisoft. :?

There have been concerns that it might be more important to decide on the business form of the society, i.e. private limited company, joint stock company, etc., before deciding the name under which it should become known.

Are there any thoughts on this?

Well, deciding on a business form means getting serious,
whereas looking for a name is pretty much just for fun...

...of course we need to talk about the business form,
but prior to that we gotta talk about the business model,
decide on its structures, specify its objectives, put sb. in
charge etc. pp.

So in the end it´s just so much easier to find a name... :P

That is exactly why I was asking. Because it is so much easier to find a name. And because it is so much harder to decide upon the business facts, it is high time to start talking about them.

It will be an SAS, which is a simple joint stock company under French law.

About re-discussing the whole company statutes, etc. It would be nice if we had time ahead of us, to discuss, draft, rediscuss, vote, etc. but this is not the case. That's something we will be able to do with the project once it is there, once it has been bought. In the meantime, we go for the project described in the social contract with approximately the same proposal as the last time.

Xavier,
thank you for the quick reply.
Could you please clarify which social contract you are referring to, since when I looked the last time, the ryzom.org and the virtualcitizenship.org social contracts were quite different things? For example, the vca doesn't mention a thing about the "intellectual property", only about free and open software, which in my opinion is only a subclass of the whole IP.
I'm just wondering, because all of the old pledges were made under the ryzom.org contract, and might not hold much weight if we're actually talking about the vca.org version, which leaves too many things open for this special case (Ryzom) as opposed to protecting and promoting virtual citizens' rights.

I would highly, highly suggest against using terms like "intellectual property" since they are essentially meaningless and misleading. You would be better off specifically discussing copyrights, trademarks and patents rather than using an amorphous, non-legal term such as "intellectual property." This way there is no confusion about what you mean.

These three laws have nothing in common.

This is under the Ryzom.org social contract. The VCA social contract is the organization's social contract, it's not meant to serve directly for Ryzom, only to provide general guidelines.

Thank you again, Xavier, for clarifying these things, and thank you, sfb, for educating me, since I am no expert on judicial matters ;)
