Hey, I'm sorry if this has been asked alot but I'm finding conflicting answers on the threads I visit. What is the status of the Ryzom attempt on purchase?

I think it's great that you people are attempting to do this, I would offer a pledge to help but I'm a kid, don't have a job etc etc. But I'm learning to use XSI and would love to help when I reach an acceptable standard.

Another question is that if VCA won, how would the project keep servers up? Donations?

Thanks,
Ben

As far as I know, Ryzom wouldn't become a free-to-play game; it would still have a subscription fee. Rather, the game's code and assets would become open and free.

According to Ryzom.com 's official forums' very small update on the status of proceedings: Saga of Ryzom isn't going to die. So it's just a matter of "who's going to win?" at this point. Closely followed by "what's going to change?"

As for VCA community's purchase attempt... last I heard the Liquidator still hasn't finished listing the assets, and Ryzom hasn't shown up yet. It's expected to be the big ticket item of the "auction", so to speak.

As you can get from the French version of these very forums:
http://www.brouard-daude.com/dossiers.php
Type "Gameforge" into the first field.
This will give you the updates on the case's progress, few and far between as they are.

The rest seems to be restricted to Hush Hush by French law, which makes it a terrible emotional experience for the community.

Xavier said he'd post with any additional news. But I'd keep an eye on the French forum as well.

Are you talking about this link? The only solid information it gives is that there are prospective buyers. That doesn't really tell us anything.

We can't assume that any company that buys the Ryzom assets will want to continue the game. There could be many other reasons for acquiring them. I was about to list some, but maybe that wouldn't be in keeping with Xavier's desire to fly under the radar. I can think of three or four other reasons just off the top of my head.

It won't be safe to relax unless and until VCA succeeds in its bid. Until then, we'll have to be patient and wait for Xavier to let us know when we're ready to move forward. When we do move, we'll need to move quickly.

One of the best reasons I can think of for a company to buy it is because it's an engine. Game engine licensing can run into $100,000 USD easily. And that only gets you the engine for 1 game. If you're a big game company, it would be well worth it for you to buy this just so that you have your own engine. By the time you release your 2nd game on it, it's paid for itself.

If you're a smaller engine company like T o R q U e, it would be well worth it for you to buy this and shelve it just to keep it off the market. Then you can slowly roll the features into your in-house POS and release it a little at a time, milking it for all it's worth.

And Garage Games was recently bought, so they probably have the cash to do it. They have also tinkered with (or signed NDAs with a fellow who did) mating their engine to Darkstar. An open source engine, especially one that used to cost half a million Euros to licence, would also cut into the revenue stream of Simultronics et. al.

Just donning a tin foil hat for a moment...

There's a serious flaw with this logic - when you buy a game engine for $100k you often have a game engine that has documentation and support. For example Nevrax was selling the Skeleton and part of the package was that some people from Nevrax would fly out for a week and get your team running with the kit and teach them the essentials.

You now have a game and game engine with no developers working on it any longer. I know for a fact that nearly all of those developers were burned out and waiting for the end - it would take an astounding feat to get them back into a potentially losing situation. Essentially you end up with what we, the community, have with NeL. A fantastic library that's taken a community a very long time to comprehend.

Not saying that isn't a possibility right now - I'm just saying that someone would have to be out of their mind to spend very much money on something as complex and confusing (if Ryzom is coded anything like it's counterpart) hunk of code with no ability to fall back on the original owner for help and support. A company has to demonstrate ROI to its investors and shareholders when it makes a purchase this large and failure to do so... well we're all witness to what happened with GF France.

Let's pretend for a moment that you're a game development company and you have a large staff of devs. Turning a few loose to figure out a code base that easily justify your ROI. It doesn't have to be a group like us. It could easily be 10-20 full time people who are getting paid to do it. In that instance, it makes perfect sense and honestly, licensing for a commercial engine - $100K is pretty much the bargin basement stuff. Four or five times that is far more common.

If you can drop $400K on something, another $200K for guys to figure it out and you can put 2+ games on that platform, you've come out well. Plus, since the company is out of business, it should be that hard to pick up some of the original devs before they go to work elsewhere.

In light of that, it makes perfect sense.

I sincerly hope it will never be on Torque. I am currently contributing to a virtual world project for IBM using Torque (on my own) and let me tell you, designing for torque is a pain in the a... The biggest problem is lack of documentation and the forum, well, posting there is like playing lotery. The Garagegames staff aren't obligated to visit the forum so it is left to the community. The majority of the community do not have official documentations so they gather what ever bits they can find and most of the times, the info found is either broken links, partial or outdated.

If you are an official licence owner, then maybe you have all the proper infos. Parts of the Garagegames site is locked to owners of licence. Doing a search on Internet for any Torque infos reveals very little.

Never mind, saw the news on Virtual World News

It has been a long and unsettling time since we last had an update, and at the risk of sounding like a parrot, how are the negotiations etc going?

Hm...while buying the engine up might be a good idea, if you imagined you could become productive using it in a decent period of time; expending '10-20' staff on the job is a big deal. Large publishers (EA/Microsoft) can afford to throw money at things until they adapt them to a point where their software houses can productively work with them -- but it would be more likely that someone bought things out so they could shelve them (this is a tricky argument, however -- nothing in the game code is so great that it is 'better' than any other MMO codebase...). As a current player, I don't relish that prospect -- but I doubt it would happen -- because again, the only people with money to waste like that are not likely to be concerned about startup competition -- as already stated, original devs are burned out and coming to terms with the codebase would be quite awful. That said, 2 people working together could learn up on it in a month or so I don't doubt -- but there is still a question of why bother (they'd then have to create documentation for the rest of their team ) :)

From what I know NeL is just a basic framework, containing things like the 3D and the RAID engine.

The aktual SoR Engine is based on NeL, but contains a lot more. Like the crafting system, the combat system and stuff like that.

Nope, that's not included, but it's not really too hard to create a clone of it, since there is a nice article about how exactly the position system in ryzom works.

Is this the article?
http://www.gamasutra.com/view/feature/1421/propagation_of_visual_entity_.php?print=1

I've been meaning to post that link on the official forum.
As for the RAID engine, have the major bugs been worked out for invasions?
There was some serious stability problems for the servers after two of them.

Hmm, quite interesting.
but doesn't conquer my point anyway (;
NEL is missing a lot to make an aktual working game.
