In the case of Plan A (buying Ryzom) not coming to fruition, would you support an effort to create a turnkey virtual world construction kit for community virtual worlds?

Since we don’t know how things will turn out with the liquidator(s), it is prudent to plan for a fallback. I think we can all agree that the optimum case – both for the Ryzom enthusiasts and for the general virtual world builders - is opening up Ryzom. What is not yet clear to me is how much grassroots support there is for carrying on even in the even that the liquidators are not cooperative or someone else steps in to buy Ryzom.
This is a starting thread to gauge what the level of support from the existing VCA community would be. |

I think the key question is whether we should start collecting actual money, rather than pledges. And the key to that is whether donations would need to be refunded if the bid failed. My impression is that refunds really aren't practical, and that's why we're only collecting pledges. However, the conventional wisdom is that most pledges never materialize. The court will probably assume that the actual value of our bid is say, half, or maybe a third, the amount of our pledges. So, if we have 200,000 euros in pledges, they may view this as 100,000 or less of actual cash. I'm sure there's a formula that is commonly used for this purpose, but I don't know what it is. (Does anyone know?)
Thus, if we had 200,000 euros in cash, we would have a much better chance of winning. The question, however, is what would happen to the donations if the bid did not succeed. My guess is that most people would be willing for Xavier to use the funds for some sort of fallback position, such as buying part of Ryzom or building a world construction toolkit. We would need to give Xavier a good bit of flexibility, because we don't know what will happen during the negotiations or what sudden opportunities might arise. Personally, I'm willing to make a blanket donation to VCA and trust him to spend it wisely, so I voted "Yes - high level of support (donations of time or money)".
It might be a good idea to rephrase the questions or start a new poll specifically on whether to start collecting cash. I think we need to seriously consider this issue. |

For that part I have an idea:
How about dividing the donation system in two different parts?
One where we donate actual money to VCA to develope a virtual world builders toolkit (which could be based on Ryzom).
That way we get some actual cash, but we don't need to refund any of it, because none would be angry if it weren't used for Ryzom.
Of course, this might stop some from donating, because they are just interestet in Ryzom.
So that is what the other part of the donation system would be for. There, only pledges are collected and only claimed if Ryzom is bought.
that way the amount of money the liquidator would actually consider would be raised as well, because if we get 50k cash, the aquireable amount of pledges would decrease to 75k, with a total of 125k.
One other question: it seams that someone has released a rumor, about some nameless CSR claiming to have insider information that Ryzom is practically sold already.
Can anyone verify or falsify that? |

I assume you mean if the bid failed. If the bid succeeds, there's no problem; the money would be used to acquire Ryzom. Or, if he can't get the whole thing, Xavier would have discretion to use it to buy any parts of Ryzom that he can get. If the bid failed, the money would be used for a world builders kit, which the Ryzom community could use to create a new world. Those who would want their donations to be returned to them if we don't get Ryzom could use the existing pledge system rather than making a cash donation. This seems like a reasonable solution to me.

I can't, but without something solid I would assume it's just a rumor. The liquidator hasn't even released a list of assets yet. And even if some company reached a secret deal with Gameforge, it would be meaningless; Gameforge doesn't make the decision. The liquidator makes the decision, and the liquidator can't make secret agreements with one bidder. |

Actually, I was told that Gameforge doesn't really own Ryzom because they never paid for it and that the liquidator from the first bankruptcy gets to sell it. The original liquidator may well have gone to the 2nd place bidder from the first bankruptcy and made a deal for Ryzom.
I will say that the fact that the servers still appear to be up must mean that someone is paying the bills. On October 2nd, the liquidator announced that they'd be shutting the game off if they hadn't found a buyer and someone to assume the ongoing operational liability. That means that as of 10/23/2007 the game should be off line. It is not and I fear that this does not bode well for "Plan A". |

If the notice at the foot of the unoffical forums is to be believed, Gameforge is the owner.
Plus the servers are back up and the game is running at full speed again. |

Huh? seems my response vanished, so again:
Well I just assumed that we would create such a world building toolkit, no matter if we were folowing plan A (Ryzom based) or plan B (other engine).
Just because it would probably be the best option to create new content for the game.
The R² editor would be very nice start for such an toolkit.
But my real reason for posting is that there are still no new information.
I thought german bureaucrats were lacy, but that frensh liquidator is ridiculus.
Its one or two weeks after timeline and still noone has heard anything, or have you?
Anyway VCA is not doing anything productive, either. (at least nothing overtly visible)
How about updating the news on the mainpage, they are just one year old (;.
Or setting up that second donations system? |
