Does anyone here know how Ryzom's servers are set up? If the Free Ryzom movement succeeds, what would be the minimum hardware configuration to run a shard (I know more players = more servers).

I am trying to get a general idea of how the servers are generally laid out. Is there a front-end server that connects players to a middle tier "world" server (that cooridnates locations, chats, etc..) which passes data back to the database server?

I imagine that the current configuration is a complex cluster of servers to handle thousands of players. Is the clustering built into the game code, or is it built into the host OS's?

I know how it works but I cannot tell :(

All I can say is that you can run a little shard with a small area and a few players on a good workstation PC. It s necessary if you want to dev and test the server code :)

My source are shady, but from the last year spending report, we need 8 servers. I do not know how the load balancing works, but it seams to be made in the NeL. From what I saw, what is eating the power are principally the mobs, not the players.

I think you can run Silam on a single computer if you manage to install a login manager. But all of this are pure speculation.

Didn't you already ask this on the Ryzom forums? ^^

Yes, I did. But I was looking for more technical detail here - and I got it, even if it is merely speculation.

If this game does go open source, I am sure there are others, besides myself who will want to run their own servers. I have the the servers and the means of co-locating a few. Of course, maybe it won't work out in the end and it won't matter anyway.

Thanks everyone.

Perhaps could you try to compile and install Snowballs servers for the moment :p

I am just interested. On what OS does the Server run? The good or the bad OS ;)
All though I know that the Clint runs only on Windows, I am sure that once freed there will be efforts for a native Linux Client.

From what I understand, the servers on the back-end run Linux. A Debian cluster is the term they used on the official forums when I asked.

Sure can: http://forums.ryzom.com/forum/showthread.php?t=31605

The "Debian Cluster" is mentioned as a rumor in post #4. I guess he only meant it as a rumor, not fact.

EDIT: Beren beat me to it :)
