| I'm still very fuzzy on the details, so some clarification would be wonderful. What would the VCP actually be buying? NeL is already OSS if I'm not mistaken, so is it the game content/art/servers? Do we even know what's for sale yet? Thanks for the info! |

We'll probably try to buy the same thing as the last time (ie code, art, leveldesign, user base, accounts&world saves, etc.).

NeL is only a small fragment of the code base, there is a lot of software code, tools, etc. to free.

Not for sure yet, as it has to be confirmed by the liquidator, but if what we were told is true, we have a pretty good idea. |

No; it should be in the next few days, but it depends on the work they have, how much money they think they can get from us and also depends on the position of Venus on the sky. When we get it, I'll let you know. |

| When you do talk to them, can you ask them if they could get the servers to be rebooted ? :P People can't enjoy their 3... no 2, last weeks ingame. And to save that game, we don't only need people who'd work on it, but also players to PLAY it. The game is unplayable right now. If you can't get the servers rebooted, you could use it as an argument to get the price down ? :P |

The game servers appear to be working well again. I was able to log in and play a bit. This makes me all the more anxious to save Ryzom. I hope that we are successful.
Xavier: if this movement is successful, would the entire codebase, tools, artwork, etc.. be available under an OSS license? In essence, would it be conceivable for others to attempt to run their own Ryzom server(s)? Would these server operators be permitted to modify the game? Would they be permitted to charge any money to cover the server operating costs? |

The answer is yes to all your questions. |

But what I meant to say is: if a big player comes in, grabs the code, invests in 10 servers and starts advertising for his new, brand and shiny version of Ryzom, does the current expected license allow that to happen?
Yes. If somebody is ready to invest into Ryzom and eventually improve it, why should we oppose it? The only thing which would be sad in such a situation is the fact that they wouldn't have to publish the changes they make to the server code. When AGPLv3 goes out, we could fix this, but in the meantime there isn't much we can do about it. |

I assume that Ryzom is a trademark and the trademark would be included with the other assets. If so, the use of the term "Ryzom" could be limited even if everything is completely open source. Thus, it would still be possible to maintain an "official" game. A fork would need to choose a new name and would not be mistaken for the official Saga of Ryzom. |
