Our company downloaded Open-source NEL game engine and started using it for our MMORPG project but we could not find any detailed documentation or architecture design of the engine.
I wonder where I can get (or buy) this documentation (in English).
Thanks

anh4em,
I'm really afraid that what you see is what you get. I would encourage you to visit the new OpenNeL (the official community behind open-sourced NeL) website. We are recognized by Nevrax/Gameforge (note the domain is open.nevrax.org) and are actively patching the code-base for various fixes that relate to the community at large.
We have updated the documentation from the old website a bit but that is still very much a work in progress.
If you have problems, questions or require guidance I really suggest that you visit the new forums or come visit us in the IRC channel.
We will also be resuming nightly doxygen builds as soon as possible.
Thanks!

| In theory, does the OpenNel codebase have everything a company would need to develop a new MMORPG? Does it have server code, client code and network code? |

This question is too vague considering the complexity of creating an MMORPG. The short but somewhat inaccurate answer is yes. The long complex answer is not entirely.
OpenNeL provides all of the framework necessary to create an MMORPG but provides no gameplay/rules mechanism. So it comes with a basic server framework, a basic technology demo (Snowballs) and all of the essential utilities to enable you to create the game logic. Things such as networking infrastructure, spacial sound systems (with a very nice loading system,) abstraction from the hardware (sound and 3D driver sub-systems to target specific platforms,) a robust 3d system (that, admittedly needs some TLC. It was designed for the GeForce2,) and a bevy of miscellaneous tools to enable you. Things such as serialization, internationalization, string management and mapping, config file management, threading and coroutine management, pure dynamic library management and much more.
I would check out the package page and the features page for more information about what OpenNeL provides and what is expected of anyone implementing a game using it.
One thing to remember is that OpenNeL is largely ala carte with the exception of NLMISC. |
