Hello,
Adding to the list of "me-too" (like Raph Koster's Areae), there has been some rumor about Google leaning toward making a metaverse out of Google Earth. Not sure this is to be taken seriously, but having Google willing to go this way makes me nervous. In a lot of people's head, "surfing the Web" means loading Google's homepage. They sure have a lot of firepower, and even a well established standard would probably have a hard time competing... |

Any word on whether Areae will be open source?
If Google did make a virtual world out of Google Earth, it would be possible to create an open-source alternative based on resources such as World Wind and Digital Universe. In fact, it might be worth doing that even if Google doesn't enter the market. |

Given Raph Koster's standpoint on VCA, I doubt it. I should find the time to write a public answer to this btw...

Agreed; it will come one day or another, so better have it using free software and standards from the start. |

This might be a worthwhile project to undertake once we have a game engine. |
