Hi all,
I think we could do with an "event" section somewhere visible. Could be on the main page of the www.virtualcitizenship.org or stuck on the right of the forums or something.
I just say that because of two things:
1- There has been or will be an IRL meeting in Paris (and I would love to hear who was there and what was said)
2- I missed that nice IRC meeting where there was quite a bit of discussions about creating a test shard with people from Project Angela and PlaneShift. I advise all the technical people interested in the new "build a world" project to have a read at the IRC log here http://www.virtualcitizenship.org/static/irc_20070118.html.
Here is a very brief summary of the 4h discussion I missed (please anyone correct me if I report something stupid or wrong):
* PlaneShift is open source, however they (or at least their project leader Talad) seem to have a specific philosophy incompatible with ours:
- All code becomes copyright of their not for profit association "Atomic Blue"
- All art becomes their property
In other word, code is open but content is closed. The game is free (as in beer) but not quite libre.
* Guys from Project Angela are as motivated as we are and more than willing to join forces to create a common architecture base.
* The project of a common ProjectAngela / VCA MMORPG base should be kicked off soon under the name "Build a World" and probably a website a the www.buildaworld.net (not up yet at the time of writing).
* An architecture base ... based on? ... either a pull from PlaneShift (which uses CrystalSpace) or Delta3D (which uses Open Scene Graph).
* Valentin (Lacambre I assume here) will provide the project with two physical machines to run the two evaluation shards PS and D3D.

To Xavier or any other mod: if there was a plan to make a more formal announcement to the community feel free to edit/erase my post. But any info here is already available on the forum burried somewhere else. |
