The website was down today, up to 4pm GMT+1; "someone" had forgotten to pay the bill... ;p Everything is no back to normal, sorry for that. |

Actually, that raises a good question: "who" pays the bill? Do you?
Shoulnd't we all pay a small membership fee to share these cost?

Yep, most of the time; actually, Ryzom.org and the VCA are hosted on the Plebia servers - a non profit hosting organisation hosting the websites of a few friends.

Agreed, especially since the current server and code doesn't handle the type of traffic a large scale campaign generates. And there are other types of expenses we may have to make in such cases: lawyers, travels, phone bills, etc. For Ryzom, the main actors were all at Paris to discuss things directly, Valentin was paying for the lawyer, and I paid 200 € in phone bills, but it would be better to share this the next time.
In fact, this even raises the question of funding. In addition to the membership fee (20€ a year?), we could have special donation programs meant to create funds, like the "fund for a new Ryzom.org campaign", the "fund for creating a new shard based on crystal space", etc. and let everyone willing to contribute to them. We would need to list precisely what would be the use of these funds and be very transparent about how it is spent, but this is something to be considered.
I'll write something more detailed when I get the time, but feel free to comment or add to it already. |
