First of all Hi to everyone :)
I have been lurking on this forum for some time now, and have been sady following the disruption of this great idea into several pipe dreams following the ryzom buyout by gameforge.
I really don't think building a MMORPG from scratch is feasable at all (and I think I have some experience in the field of open-source game development; see sig), and I don't see another complete MMORPG by a bankrupt company right now either that would be "buyable" by a community effort. Ryzom really was a one time chance I guess :(
Maybe another one will appear sometime in the future, but it will probably require the complete resurection of this project since it is pretty obvious that that right now it really has come to a complete standstill (and thus death), at least jugding by this forum... but maybe I am wrong about that.
You could have a look at Vendetta-Online though:

It's not really dead, nor is it complete, but maybe it would benefit from open-sourceing it and it could be "cheap to buy" as there really arn't that many people playing it, or maybe some sort of arrengement could be made to make the entire game open-source, while still keeping the original development team contributing to the game.
But I am not sure if it really is a good idea as it is also not really done yet either, but pretty far along in development.
But it doesn't hurt to mention it I guess ;) |

| Vendetta is a nice game, although I don't think we should buy a new MMO. An old MMO is much more sophisticated (e.g. bug-free ^^) and we would have less work. This is not dead. |

| Vendetta isn't really new though, it has been around longer than Ryzom I think, but development is really slow and thus it might benefit from open-sourceing it. |
