I have never worked in lager groups, so what kind of files are we talking about
here. In the CAD area they have common files STEP2 and IGES.
Converters, what do we have to choose from, are there any open source
alternatives here ?
Maybe a stupid question |

| Honestly, about the best convertor to use for any major 3D engine would be Milkshape3D which in itself is a 3D program. It supports the most file formats out there for game engines and whatnot. And in my usual art pipeline I use, I do what I need in another program and then take it over to Milkshape for animating and exporting to the engine. |

| That it does, as does one of the other main programs I use which is Carrara 5 Pro, but that's a 500 dollar program which I don't use a lot, and has a plant/tree generator built into it which isn't that bad actually. |

| Pretty much two of the better formats for animation and models in a game I think are FBX and COLLADA. Mainly cause of their universalness. Just about every program out there can export and import those two formats. |
