Anyone interested in building a PW/MMO/VW should really read this book. Richard Bartle has been around since the first MUDs and the guy knows what he is talking about. Even when you don't agree with him (e.g. his view on permadeath in game worlds is controversial), he challenges you to think the problem through.

I'll throw in this page of books as well, a bit dated but core knowledge on graphics programming at a low level.
